A little bit about me: I’m a Pisces. Born and raised in Singapore on March 16 1972. I was born in the Kandang Kerbau Hospital, (today known as KK Women and Children’s Hospital). Funny name for those who understands the Malay language. Let me give a translation for the benefit of those who don’t understand Malay. Kandang means Pen (as in a small enclosure for domestic animals) and Kerbau means Bull! So an English name for the hospital would be Bull Pen Hospital! Maybe I might do some research on why the hospital is named such and share the information with you… just for General Knowledge. Some History students may find the information useful! You never know :)

Work: I’m an Instructional Designer at The National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore. I work in the Centre for IT in Education and as many IDs out there, I design and develop teaching and learning materials as well as easy-to-use pedagogical templates to encourage lecturers to try out a bit of e-Learning. Truly, I see myself more of a developer. I majored in Multimedia Design so I love to dabble with design work as well as technology (esp open-source with php and mySQL). I also enjoyed some multimedia and technology training stints. I was thinking of a way to combine both my multimedia design and training skills, and when I learnt about Intructional Design, I just saw big flashing neons going BINGO everywhere.

Study: I’m at the tail end of my Masters course specifically the MA Instructional Design & Technology in NIE. Just another semester to go and I’ll graduate in July 2007. I may (most probably will) get myself into more sleepness nights and headaches when I start on my PhD, hopefully next year after I get the Masters out of the way.

Love: Life, nature, animals (cats esp) & music (try Garage Band for the Mac!). Preferred genres - Rock (Deep Purple, Rainbow, Led Zep…) and Metal (Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica…). I do listen to other genres as in Pop and a bit of Jazz (Buble type). IBM and Mac user. Currently I’m hooked onto my Intel-based Macbook Pro which also runs Win XP through Parallels. I also love digital photography. You’ll be able to see some pictures soon. One of my favourites is the cuppa at the start and here’s another for now :)

Ok I’ll end for now cos I have a bit more work to do to get this site all jazzed up!

    Hi Mazlan

Chanced upon your posts on your trip to Bhutan.
From the photos, the place still look similar when it was 3 years ago.

The pictures looked familiar and rekindled good memories of mine :D
Well, I lived in Paro for a year, as volunteer with NIE Paro 3 years ago.
Yes, the colleagues there were warm.
And the students there were so different from those we have back in Singapore.

    Cheers.

    Hi Loh!

I was there with a colleague and a cool guy from SIF called Yeen Chern. He did mention someone working with NIE Paro for a year. I visited your site and saw that you worked with Karma Chewwang or better known as Captain. I might be going back in a few months time with a new SIF person. I truly enjoyed the trip there and from your blog, I can see you did too!

    Cheers!

Yes. I enjoyed my time there alot.
But, it’s really a survival test, when having to stay there for 1 year.
A totally different environment, different culture, and people of different mindset.
In fact, have lots of new discoveries - things that we don’t find in Singapore.
There were times I thought, er… “I’m a country bumpkin!”

Did you have the chance to go into the ‘classroom’ to work with the 3rd year EIT students?
Well, they are an enthusiastic lot, too :D
Oh yes, not to forget Upendra, the LAN manager, he is also a very nice chap, too :D

    Cheers,
    Kwai Yin

I conducted a workshop on using educational technologies for teaching and learning. I’m not sure if they were 3rd year students but they sure were interested especially on technologies that support online communication.

I think I met Upendra but was not introduced to him. Small, smiley, and very intelligent dude!

    Cheers, maz.
